Festivals in August

Our Festivals programme continues over the summer holidays even as things get a little bit quieter at our nursery schools and kindergartens. We kick things off with Playday, a campaign to remind parents and children in childcare about the importance of being just a little bit silly at least once a year and move on through to World Humanitarian Day on the 19th of August. It's an important day to mark the important work that humanitarian organisations undertake to help those in conflict zones around the world. We finish off the month celebrating two huge landmark events: the abolition of slavery and the campaign for nuclear disarmament at the end of the month. Read on to find out more about all of these wonderful festivals!

PlayDay

Playday, celebrated across the UK on August 7, is an annual event dedicated to highlighting the importance of play in children's lives. Established in 1986 by a coalition of play organizations including the Children’s Play Council (now Play England), Playboard Northern Ireland, and Play Scotland, Playday encourages communities to come together to create playful environments and activities for children of all ages.

Abolition of Slavery Day

The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition honours the memory of those who suffered and fought against the brutal transatlantic slave trade. This day commemorates the historic uprising on the island of Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti) in 1791, which played a crucial role in the abolition of slavery. It serves as a reminder of the enduring impact of slavery on our world and highlights the ongoing struggle against all forms of oppression and injustice.

Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament Day

The International Day against Nuclear Tests, observed on August 29th, is dedicated to raising awareness about the devastating impacts of nuclear weapon tests and advocating for their complete cessation. Established by the United Nations in 2009, this day commemorates the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site in Kazakhstan in 1991, a significant milestone in the global disarmament movement.
