City of London School Highlights: March 7th

Another Week of Exciting Activities

What a fantastic week we’ve had at nursery! From flipping pancakes on Shrove Tuesday to making the most of the beautiful sunshine with plenty of outdoor play, the children have been busy learning, exploring, and having fun. The highlight of the week was Dragon Flight’s incredible excursion to the Discovery Centre for World Book Day, where our little adventurers immersed themselves in the magic of storytelling.

It’s been a week full of laughter, learning, and unforgettable moments—read on to see all the wonderful things we’ve been up to! 😊✨

Hatchlings

Modern Languages: Mandarin Storytime 🌍📖

This week, the Hatchlings explored Mandarin through storytime with a touch-and-feel book all about farm animals! The babies enjoyed pointing out different animals as we introduced their names in Mandarin, including:
🐥 Chick – Xiǎo jī
🐑 Sheep – Yáng
🐷 Pig – Zhū
🐄 Cow – Niú

During our spring gardening activity, we also practiced the word for flower in Mandarin: Huā. The children engaged in sensory exploration while learning a new language in a fun and interactive way

🍽️ Making Playdough Pancakes – The children used their fine motor skills to press, mould, stretch, pinch, and scoop as they created their own pretend pancakes with playdough and flour. We also learned the Mandarin word for Pancake – Bǐngzǐ!

Blue Dragons

On March 6th, we celebrated World Book Day by reading one of our all-time favourite stories, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. After storytime, the children got creative and made their own caterpillar out of playdough, reinforcing fine motor skills, creativity, and early literacy development.

Outings: Becoming City Explorers 🏙️🔍

This week, Blue Dragon put on their explorer hats and set off on an exciting adventure! We took a walk to the Barbican fountains, where the children enjoyed being in nature and observing their surroundings. This experience helped them develop spatial awareness, curiosity, and a deeper connection to their local community.

Specialist Teacher Sessions 🎶⚽🐷

We had an action-packed week with our specialist teachers!

Sporty Minis Session – The children focused on developing their coordination and gross motor skills by stepping over yellow ladder lines. They stretched their legs and practiced balance, helping to improve their physical strength and movement control.

🐮 Farmyard Fun with Miss Molly – During this interactive session, we were transported to the farm, where we met cows, pigs, and sheep! We sang ‘Old MacDonald’ and had a fantastic time popping bubbles, supporting language development, rhythm awareness, and sensory exploration.

Regional Education: Bringing "The Starry Night" to Life 🎨✨

This week, our preschoolers immersed themselves in art as they recreated Vincent van Gogh’s "The Starry Night." They were captivated by the circular brushstrokes needed to mimic his famous technique, making meaningful connections between their own artwork and Van Gogh’s expressive style. This creative activity was also linked to our monthly theme, France, as Van Gogh was deeply inspired by French culture. Through this hands-on experience, the children developed fine motor skills, artistic expression, and a deeper appreciation for famous artwork.

Cultural Festivals: Pancake Day & World Book Day 🥞📚

Our preschoolers celebrated Pancake Day with a fun and interactive cooking session. They were introduced to key ingredients—flour, milk, butter, and fruits—in both English and Mandarin, reinforcing language learning through play. Each child had a turn to stir the mixture and carefully pour the batter onto the pan to create mini pancakes.

For World Book Day, the Dragon Flight group had a fantastic time with face painting! Each child picked a favorite book character, and they helped one another choose colors and designs, promoting social interaction and decision-making. The children also got creative by designing their own books, using crayons, feathers, tissue paper, and glitter to decorate their pages. As they worked, they shared their favorite stories and reflected on what makes a book special to them.

STEAM: Exploring Fossils for World Wildlife Day 🦖🔬

In celebration of World Wildlife Day, our preschoolers became young paleontologists as they explored real fossils and created their own using playdough. They showed incredible imagination, crafting bug fossils, shell fossils, and even scorpion fossils! This hands-on activity supported their scientific thinking, creativity, and fine motor development while sparking curiosity about the natural world.

Extracurricular Sessions: Movement, Mindfulness, and Yoga ⚽🧘‍♂️

Our preschoolers had a blast in their Sporty Minis session, where they:
🐒 Mimicked animal movements
🎯 Balanced bean bags on different body parts
🏃 Jumped over a ladder, improving coordination and agility

In our session with Miss Molly, the children explored emotions through storytelling and yoga. They shared their own feelings, practiced relaxing poses, and ended the session with a peaceful star-gazing activity, fostering self-awareness and mindfulness.

Chinese Club: Learning Through Play 🐼🗣️

This week in Chinese Club, the preschoolers participated in a fun guessing game. We hid an animal under a basket and gave descriptive clues, encouraging the children to guess the animal’s name in Mandarin. This interactive activity enhanced their vocabulary, listening skills, and confidence in using a new language.

New Mandarin Vocabulary:

🥞 Pancake – 煎饼 (Jiān bǐng)
🌾 Flour – 面粉 (Miàn fěn)
🥛 Milk – 牛奶 (Niú nǎi)
🧈 Butter – 黄油 (Huáng yóu)
🛢 Oil – 油 (Yóu)
🦴 Fossil – 化石 (Huà shí)
📖 Book – 书 (Shū)

Amazing Excursions: A Magical Trip to the Discover Children's Centre 🚂📖

The Dragon Flight group embarked on an exciting trip to Stratford’s Discover Children’s Centre, where they were transported into the world of storytelling. The children ventured through whimsical tunnels, built their own story adventures, and brought their favorite characters to life in an immersive literary experience. To top off the adventure, they enjoyed a special lunch with a tiger who came to tea!

We also made the most of the sunny weather with a trip to Fortune Street Park. The children had a fantastic time playing football on the green and enjoying outdoor fun, developing their physical skills and teamwork.
