Another Week of Exciting Activities 

What an exciting week it has been at nursery, especially as we celebrated British Science Week! Our little learners have been busy exploring the wonders of science through fun and engaging experiments, sparking their curiosity and love for discovery. From hands-on sensory investigations to exciting cause-and-effect activities, the children have had an amazing time experimenting and learning.

Alongside our science adventures, we’ve enjoyed a week full of creativity. 

Hatchlings

This week at nursery, our Hatchlings have been busy exploring new concepts, engaging in hands-on sensory activities, and celebrating British Science Week with exciting experiments. Here's a look at what we've been up to!

Modern Languages

As part of our language development focus, the Hatchlings learned key spring-themed words in Mandarin. Through an interactive peek-a-boo game, the children discovered:

• Flowers – Huā
• Lamb – Yán
• Picnic – Yěcān

Sensory Play

Our sensory activities this week were designed to stimulate curiosity and enhance fine and gross motor skills:

• Spring Sensory Tray – The babies explored different textures, including smooth leaves, soft bumblebees, and slippery shredded material.
• Sensory Tiles – The children engaged with colourful sensory tiles, using their hands to push and poke or their feet to stomp and move the liquid inside. This activity encouraged motor skill development and colour recognition.
• Water Play – The Hatchlings practiced their fine motor skills by pinching and scooping spring flowers from the water into their bowls, refining hand-eye coordination.

This week, the Hatchlings embarked on a wonderful trip to Tate Modern, where they had the opportunity to explore the world of art in an inspiring and sensory-rich environment. The visit allowed our little learners to experience different textures, colours, and shapes while engaging with a variety of artworks.

Blue Dragons

This week has been an exciting and enriching time for the Blue Dragon group, filled with creativity, hands-on experiments, and engaging specialist sessions.

Regional Education

As part of our exploration of famous artists, the Blue Dragons learned about the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. We focused on two of his most well-known masterpieces:

• Sunflowers – The children created their own sunflower-inspired artwork by carefully sticking petals onto a flower to replicate van Gogh’s iconic painting.
• Starry Night – We explored the famous swirling sky and used different materials to recreate our own unique interpretations of this classic piece.

Through these activities, the children developed their fine motor skills, creativity, and appreciation for art.

Festivals of the Week

This week, the Blue Dragons celebrated British Science Week by transforming into young scientists! Wearing their lab coats, they took part in an exciting experiment exploring how food colouring moves through shaving foam.

Each child used a pipette to squeeze droplets of food colouring into a jug filled with foam, observing how the colours slowly made their way through the layers. This hands-on experiment encouraged scientific thinking, fine motor development, and curiosity about cause and effect.

Specialist Teachers

Our specialist sessions this week were filled with movement, music, and sensory exploration:

• Sporty Minis – The Blue Dragons practiced their fine motor skills and coordination by flipping cones over as quickly as possible, turning the activity into an exciting race. This session was a great way for the children to burn energy while improving agility and control.
• Miss Molly’s Music Session – The children enjoyed singing their favourite nursery rhymes, including “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” and “Old MacDonald”, while engaging in interactive movements to support rhythm, coordination, and language development.
• Sensory Time – To wind down, the children explored magic lights and colourful sensory lights, helping them regulate their emotions, relax, and find moments of calm.

Dragon Flight

Regional Education
This week, our Dragon Flights took us on an exciting exploration of London! We began by looking at pictures of some of the city’s most iconic landmarks and discussing which ones the children had visited. They had a blast engaging with a small world tuff tray, featuring elements such as the famous red bus, fire trucks, and police cars. Our exploration of Big Ben, one of London’s most well-known landmarks, allowed the children to get creative by using playdough, sticks, and straws to build their own version of the landmark, just like architects! This hands-on activity fostered the development of engineering skills while encouraging imaginative thinking. As part of this month's theme, we also introduced the children to Rune Design, exploring its historical significance and creating their own designs inspired by ancient symbols.

Cultural Festival
In celebration of Holi, our preschoolers participated in a vibrant finger painting activity. This hands-on experience allowed the children to explore color and texture while learning about the traditions of the festival. We discussed how Holi marks the arrival of spring, symbolizes the victory of good over evil, and promotes joy and unity. This activity not only sparked the children’s creativity but also introduced them to the cultural significance of this joyous celebration.

STEAM
To celebrate British Science Week, we dove into the world of science experiments. The children helped create a lava lamp by combining oil, water, food coloring, baking soda, and acid. They observed how the oil and water didn’t mix, then added the food coloring to see the transformation. The real excitement began when we added baking soda and acid, causing the color to move! In addition, the children took part in creating a volcanic eruption using baking soda and citric acid, providing them with a fun and educational way to learn about chemical reactions.

Sensory Activities
Our preschoolers thoroughly enjoyed a variety of sensory play activities this week. They developed their fine motor skills through water play using syringes, followed by a creative activity with cornflour to make symmetrical butterflies. The children also explored the texture of glittery jelly with their hands, offering them a rich sensory experience that engaged both their touch and imagination.

Extra-Curricular Sessions
Our preschoolers had a blast participating in a variety of extra-curricular sessions this week:

• Sporty Minis: The children worked on their listening skills, spatial awareness, and balance by completing activities such as running with spatial awareness, balancing bean bags, and jumping over ladders.
• Yoga with Miss Molly: During this session, the children practiced various yoga poses alongside nursery rhymes and enjoyed a story while moving through the poses, fostering both physical coordination and mindfulness.
• Music with Lucy Sparkels: The children had fun singing their favorite nursery rhymes and incorporating dance moves to go along with the songs. This session was a wonderful opportunity for the children to develop their turn-taking skills while boosting speech and language development.

It has been a week filled with creativity, exploration, and development, and we look forward to more exciting adventures in the week ahead!
