Westminster School Highlights - August 9, 2024

This week at Westminster Nursery School was filled with exciting activities and enriching experiences for our little ones.

From exploring beautiful gardens to engaging in diverse learning sessions, the children had a wonderful time.

What we did this week

Amazing Excursions

Our preschoolers visited Bessborough Gardens, a beautiful garden in front of the Lithuanian Embassy.

Developed in the 1980s by the Crown Estate, George Wimpey, and landscape architect Sir Peter Shepheard, the gardens feature the Queen Mother's Commemorative Fountain and various flowers and plants.

The children enjoyed the scenic views and observed the vibrant flora.

Activities

In our Dragon Flight Room

The children focused on number formation and tracing, practicing writing numbers, and understanding the concept of odd and even numbers through engaging activities.

They also participated in a fun yoga session, trying different poses to improve balance and flexibility.

Other than that, they enjoyed a ball-passing activity, fostering cooperation and teamwork, and played an exciting game of Duck Duck Goose.

Inspired by Australia, the children created their own Sydney Opera House using paper plates, enhancing their fine motor skills and learning about this iconic landmark.

In our Blue Dragons Room

Our monthly theme is Australia and the pacific rim. In light of this the children made aboriginal boomerangs which is a work of art. The blue dragons enjoyed painting their boomerangs.

The children made their own flags with various shapes and colours, took a virtual trip to Paris, and learned about the Eiffel Tower and the French flag.

They also painted cups with the Olympic ring colours, learning the five colours in both Mandarin and English.

They discovered Australian animals like kangaroos, koalas, and crocodiles through pictures and stories, enjoying an educational adventure into Australia's wildlife.

In our Baby Dragons Room

The babies explored making marks using tissue paper and paint, enhancing their sensory awareness and fine motor skills. They enjoyed the different textures and bright colours.

The introduction of simple, colourful puzzles encouraged hand-eye coordination and cognitive skills, with the babies fitting pieces together and developing their concentration and problem-solving abilities.

Languages

Mandarin

The children learned and reviewed body parts in Mandarin, including 头 (head), 肩膀 (shoulders), 膝盖 (knees), and 脚 (feet).

They played Duck Duck Goose in both Mandarin (鸭子鸭子鹅) and English.

The children also enjoyed an Erhu music session with our teacher Sophie. The Erhu (二胡), a traditional Chinese two-stringed bowed instrument, offered a fascinating musical experience.

Cultures & Regions

The children engaged in a Sydney Opera House art activity, building their creations with paper plates and learning about this iconic landmark.

Festivals

We celebrated our preschoolers' graduation with a special ceremony, marking their achievements and growth.

This week was full of fun, learning, and exploration, leaving our children excited and curious for more!
