The Middle East & The Muslim World

In September, we look into the cultures of the middle east and the muslim world, from old Arabia and Persia through to the modern day, observing the landscapes and the desert traditions of the bedouin, through to the influences of the Islamic and Turkic empires across the Middle East, Europe, North Africa and into Central Asia. Look out for the artistic traditions, music, food, dance and fabrics, as well as some of the noted thinkers who have had such an impact on who we are and what we think today

Middle Eastern Scripts and Legends

The Middle East is home to a rich tapestry of writing systems and linguistic traditions. From the elegant cursive lines of the Arabic script to the unique adaptations of the Persian and Turkish alphabets, we'll look at the beauty of the written form, as well as the lullabies, fables and oral traditions of the region

Middle Eastern Textiles

we're going to explore the colourful world of traditional fabrics and textiles from the Middle East. In Arabic, Persian, and Turkic cultures, people wear beautiful clothes made from special fabrics with bright colours, unique shapes, and amazing patterns. We'll be making Kaftans, Abayas and Chadors, amongst other things from our fabric corner.

Middle Eastern Ceramics

We're going to explore the colourful world of Middle Eastern traditional ceramics and pottery. In places like Egypt, Iran, and Turkey, people make beautiful pots, plates, and tiles with bright colors and fun patterns. From Persian blue, turquoise cand intricate floral designs to Arabic golden latticework, and Turkic geometric tiles, we're going to look at it all

Middle Eastern Cuisine

Middle Eastern cuisine is a delicious blend of flavours, spices, and fresh ingredients. It includes tasty dishes like hummus, falafel, kebabs, and baklava. We're going to teaching our children how to make hummus, bake bakklava, mix those rich spices and warm pitta bread all the while having our menus of the month be inspired by the rich flavours of the Levant.

Music Programme

Middle Eastern Music & Dance

We're going to learn about the amazing dance and music traditions from the Middle East - the joyful Dabke dance of the Arabs, and the beautiful belly dance of Turkey. We'll look at instruments like the  santur and zither, and try our hand at Sufi whirling!

We're going to learn about the different religions in the Middle East and how, for centuries, Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Zoroastrianism lived side by side and how the countries are still a very rich mix of religious groups, sects and subsects, some going back millenia,
