Armistice Day

November is a month for Global Education Week, World Children's Day, Fireworks night, Day of the Dead and International Stress Awareness Day. But it is Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday that holds a special place for us. It serves as a reminder as to the fragile nature of our relationships and why intercultural understanding - learning to think from the other perspective - is so important, especially today.

Day of the Dead

Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a vibrant and deeply spiritual Mexican holiday celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. Rooted in ancient indigenous traditions, it honours deceased loved ones through lively festivities and solemn rituals. Families create colourful altars (ofrendas) adorned with photos, marigolds, candles, and favorite foods of the departed and is marked by music, dancing, and the sharing of stories, symbolising the belief that death is a natural part of life’s cycle.

Guy Fawkes Bonfire Night

Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Bonfire Night, is a British tradition celebrated on November 5th, commemorating the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. This historical event saw Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators attempting to blow up the Houses of Parliament to overthrow King James I. The night is marked by spectacular fireworks displays, bonfires, and the burning of effigies of Guy Fawkes. Communities across the UK gather to enjoy this festive occasion, which serves as a reminder of the country's historical struggle for political stability and the triumph of order over rebellion.

Armistice Day

Armistice Day, observed on November 11th, commemorates the end of World War I, when the armistice was signed between the Allied Powers and Germany in 1918, marking a cessation of hostilities on the Western Front. This day honors the bravery and sacrifices of soldiers who fought in the war and remembers those who lost their lives in service to their countries. Originally known as Remembrance Day in Commonwealth countries and Veterans Day in the United States, Armistice Day serves as a solemn reminder of the toll of war and the importance of striving for peace and reconciliation.
