September Festivals

September is a culturally rich month filled with a variety of international festivals, observances, and religious celebrations. The Hindu festival of Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Lord Ganesha with elaborate processions and rituals. The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, is observed with prayers and the blowing of the shofar. Mexico celebrates its Independence Day with parades and patriotic festivities. The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is celebrated in many East Asian countries with mooncakes and lantern displays. Additionally, International Peace Day promotes global peace efforts, and Oktoberfest in Munich, although starting in September, begins its famous celebration of Bavarian culture. These events highlight the diverse ways communities around the world come together to celebrate heritage, history, and harmony.

China's Hungry Ghost Fesival

China's Spirit Festival, also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival, is a traditional Chinese belief that on this day, the gates of the afterlife open, allowing spirits to roam freely among the living. Families honour their deceased ancestors by offering food, burning incense, and performing rituals to appease and honour these spirits. The Spirit Festival reflects Chinese cultural beliefs in respecting ancestors and maintaining harmony between the living and the dead, emphasising the importance of filial piety and reverence for familial heritage.

Today, let's learn about a very special festival called Ganesh Chaturthi, which happens on September 7. This joyful celebration is all about honoring Lord Ganesha, who is the elephant-headed god known for bringing good luck and removing obstacles. During Ganesh Chaturthi, families make beautiful clay statues of Ganesha, decorate their homes, sing songs, and share yummy sweets. It's a time filled with fun, happiness, and colorful decorations as everyone comes together to celebrate and say, "Ganpati Bappa Morya!"

Organised by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), it aims to help us all - our kiddies as well - learn the principles of safety and what to do in an emergency, which is one of the reasons we offer our parents free paediatric first aid training as standard!

Established by the United Nations, this day calls for a 24-hour period of non-violence and ceasefire, fostering a spirit of harmony and understanding across the world.
